Any experience with Zigview

I am trying to set up a camera to 'trap' someone who is vandalising a fence, and one way I thought of doing so would be to use my dslr (Canon 400D) with some sort of triggering device.

One I have come across is a varient of the 'Zigview' finders, which advertises the ability to fire on a motion detected in the viewfinder. I was wondering if anyone has used such.

It is a significant expense, but I could justify getting something that could be used in the future for other things, rather than getting something whose only use was to do this job.

Any alternate suggestions welcome, of course

I have no direct experience with Zigview, but did research them a few months ago. They looked very interesting but had mixed reviews, mostly around build quality. It was very hard for me to justify the expense. With the 1dm3, that search ended.

I'm glad you mentioned your needs, however, as I will recommend that you pursue an alternate approach from the vast array of home security devices that are available. This store serves as one example. I'm sure you must have the quivalent - or even better, considering the security camera boomlet in the UK.

Re: Any experience with Zigview

I would recommend getting a wildlife cam. Then you don't have to worry about someone trashing your expensive kit.
Bushnell Trail Scout 1.3 Mp Digital Game Camera, Big Game, Bushnell, Bushnell Trail Scout at Sportsman's Guide
  • 1.3 MP resolution Digital Camera captures clear full-color images in day / night or 24-hr. modes
  • Motion-detecting passive infrared sensor has a big 60' range. 3 image-delay settings for when it's been triggered
  • SD memory card slot that includes 32Mb card
  • Large incandescent flash with 30' range
  • Test mode for easy set-up
  • Easy toggle switch and backlit LCD screen make checking and changing settings simple
  • Set for still picture or 15-second movie clips. Has event counter and time / date stamp on images
I have just started working with a Zigview but I don't think it would meet your needs. There needs to be enough light for the camera to see.
