Gloves

Winter's here. What sort of gloves do people shoot with? I had some cross-country gloves by swix, but lost them. What should I replace them with?

Re: Gloves

Hi Jonathon,

I use a good pair of motocross gloves.

The palm and inner side of the fingers is constructed from a very thin and smooth leather that allows me to feel and operate all the camera buttons and dials very easily.

The back of the gloves are made from a 'man made' material that allows your hands to breath so you dont end up with sweaty hands.

I did remove the sewn on 'armour' that covered the knuckles just to make them more comfortable.

I bought them from a MX trader at a race meeting and I think I paid about £65 for them, I know that might seem a lot but they are now 4 years old and still look new even though they have been washed many times.

Hope that helps.

Re: Gloves

For cold weather, windstopper polar fleece is the way to go. Much warmer than they look, and fine enough that you don't have to take them off for anything. North Face makes a good pair with sticky grip stuff on the fingers that really work well.

Re: Gloves

I have a great pair of Polartec gloves. The 4 fingertips and thumbtip flip back, leaving the fingers exposed to the first joint. There is a magnetic snap that holds them in this position. I bought a very thin pair of glove liners that I use when the weather gets really cold. I can use the combination and still get a good grip on my 1D2 and operate all controls easily.

I got my gloves at EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports) but I'm sure you can get similar ones at REI or other such shops.

Re: Gloves

When the thermometer drops here in Chicago (as it currently has) I use a pair of Polar Fleece gloves that feature open fingertips and rubberized grip palms. I often wear a pair of mittens over these if I'm going to be out for an extended time.

Re: Gloves

I use Polartec Mittens that convert to fingerless gloves, and as the temperature drops I add:

1. Outdoor Research Powerliners 150 gloves - they fit snuggly inside the mittens

2. Hand Warmers - I carry these for extreme weather and use inside the liner as required

Re: Gloves

I start out with Foxgloves Grip from Naturescapes. These go a long way, but are thin and sensitive enough that there's not much I can't do to the camera with them on. I was even able to tie a few flies on while wearing them on a recent fishing trip in the snow in Idaho.

When it gets colder I add on top some fingerless fleece fishing gloves... Simms, REI, Patagonia, etc.
