Thread Size

What is the thread size at the top of my Gitzo Tripod / bottom of my Arca B1 ballhead? I need to attach the ballhead to a Bogen Super Clamp but the stud that came with it is much smaller than the thread of the ballhead.

Thanks in advance

Ken

Re: Thread Size

these fittings are almost always one of two sizes... 1/4 20 or 3/8 16. You have the larger one on your tripod and ball head; the smaller one on the clamp. There's a bushing commonly available that will screw into 3/8 16 hole in your ball had and allow it to be mated to smaller 1/4 20 threaded devices. Go to:

http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/tool...uff/index.html

and click the bushing link on the right. That will show you a picture of what I'm talking about. These are widely available.

Thanks Bob.

Ya know what? I may have one of those bushing adapters around here somewhere from a years-ago purchase from RRS.

Re: Thread Size

There is a 3/8" stud available for the superclamp that allows mounting a ball head directly.

Re: Thread Size

I saw the 3/8 stud on B&H's site but decided to go with a Bogen mounting plate as it seemed more of a fit to the bottom of the ballhead. I'm shooting the finish line at a marathon next week and want to attach the clamp to a railing & the ballhead (or maybe a Wimberly Head) to the clamp. The stud you mentioned looks like it holds the ballhead way too far away from the clamp. Makes me a little nervous.

Re: Thread Size

I am using the 'reversible short stud' seen here:

Bogen / Manfrotto 2909 Super Clamp with Reversible Short Stud

B&H does not have the short stud for sale separately it seems. I've bought them separately at Glazers in Seattle. The ball head screws down flat and tight on the Super Clamp and is very secure.
