Any thoughts on the 'best' monopod to buy?

I'm considering a monopod to lighten my hiking load. The largest lens I'll use is the AF-S 80-200mm Nikon zoom with a D2x. I'm 5'9", if that makes a difference.

I'd like to hear about any problems anyone has had with failures of their pods, too.

Thanks,

Gup.

Gup -- are you considering replacing a tripod? What kind of shots do you do while hiking?

I'm thinking that if you hike in daylight and do scenics and flower shots -- and don't do HDR, then why not just go handheld? You might also consider a 18-200 lens to really lighten the load.

On the other hand, if you want to do long shutter opens for nice water shots, or do HDR, or hike in the dark to catch that incredible light at sunrise, then you need a nice and light Gitzo 1100 series carbon tripod -- no monopod will cut it.

Re: Any thoughts on the 'best' monopod to buy?

Gup: I've no idea what the "best" monopod is; there are dozens to choose from. I can offer only my own experience and opinion.

Not being a sports photographer I don't use a monopod that frequently. But I have tried several brands and models over the years. My personal favorite, and the model I currently use, is the Bogen/Manfrotto NeoTec 685B (a relatively new model of their NeoTec line. It's lightweight, extends with a simple pull, retracts by simply squeezing the top lever (there's a safety on this model to prevent accidental release). Once extended it's as sturdy as any model I've used. It might not be optimal choice for someone who uses enormous lenses but the longest lens I use is a 70-200mm with an extender and it's just ducky for that.

Hope this helps.

If you have the means, a Gitzo carbon fibre unit would be the best. Failing that, a Gitzo or Manfroto/Bogen aluminium would work well, but be bit heavier. You don't need the full sized tubing, just the light hiking model.

Re: Any thoughts on the 'best' monopod to buy?

Thanks for the input gentlemen. I should have been a little clearer.

I have never owned a monopod, choosing instead to use a tripod. I shoot mostly landscapes and that means hiking to the best vantage points and, yes, often being there in the dark before the sun rises. Currently I use a Gitzo CF G2227 with an Arca Swiss ballhead. In retrospect, I guess I have been thinking about a monopod since adding the ballhead. It is heavier than the Gitzo head I use to use and somewhat negates the weight saving of the carbon fibre (I know it's just an illusion). Perhaps what I really need is a strong walking stick (that's what the monopod would end up being). After all, I did buy the ballhead for its panning properties. Maybe I'll lose the binoculars instead of the tripod.

Sometimes thinking out loud does help!

Gup.

Agree with much good advice already offered above. Sounds as though you need a tripod for what you do. My lightest is a Gitzo 1127, to which I've added the Markins extendable spikes. (Blowtorch fun.) Also agree with the 18-200 as a versatile lens. For ballheads I use the Kirk BH-3's, since I like to use light gear. Have replaced their clamps with the lever/level jobs from RRS. (I have L-brackets on all bodies.)

If you hike as I, get a Feisol CM-1471 with the stainless steel feet. They do not wear out when you use the pod as a walking stick. feisol.com
Total cost with shipping is $136 USD. It is a great product.
My best to you,
Dale
