In the field I have been using Ken Tanaka's leveling trick. But I stil made marks on my Gitzo 1325 for my "default" height on level, even ground. I borrowed my wife's nail polish and made a dot on each leg. That stuff is hard to get off, and seems to do the trick.
Although, with my bad luck I might find in a year it has eaten through the carbon fiber, and the tripod will collapse, legless, with my 500mm lens on it!
