Rain covers for telephoto lenses in UK

Well, I've given up on my long standing friend, the chamois leather for waterproofing my
camera when it's wet.

I need one of those protective rain covers that can protect a long telephoto and
digital camera. There is a particular brand (I'm not sure of it's make) which
make a very distinctive, light blue rain covers. Is it Nikon? If anyone knows
the name of the manufacture and where I can pick one up, please let me know.

Re: Rain covers for telephoto lenses in UK

I tend to use a Tesco's carrier bag - okay I realise it is not the best soloution, but it is the cheapest (Other supermarket carrier bags are available - in the words of the BBC)

And before anyone says I am mad (which I am!) I am not the only one to use a carrier bag!! It is surprising how many other photographers at football games use them!

Of course other suggestions are welcome

Max,

I'm guessing that the light blue rain covers (with 'NIKON' writen large on the side in yellow) you have seen are the free rain covers given away by Nikon Profesional Services at major sports events ( Olympics / Open Golf / World Cup etc ). Canon give away similar covers but in white with 'Canon' written in red on the side.

You can't buy these, just ask for one next time you see an NPS or CPS presence at a media centre, or if you are on good terms with your NPS/CPS rep, just give them a call and ask them nicely to send you one.

There are lots of makes that you can buy in the shops. The best is probably 'Aquatech' but the UK prices start from 180 GBP. I'd recommend having a look at the Lightware raincover, the Flashcentre in London is selling them for 27 GBP

Hope this helps,

John.

Ian,

Yes, you are quite mad! I've wrestled with the plastic carrier bag method in the past.
In principle, it's a cheap effective solution in a time of crises. However, the amount
of elastic bands and carefully positioned pieces of tape to hold the bloody thing in
place on wet and windy days make it a logistical nightmare!

John,

Aha! So, the source of the cool light blue rain covers reveals themselves! I did
suspect they were a Nikon invention. I can't say I've seen too many of the equivalent
Canon ones but I will contatct CPS and find out. Your other suggestions appear
very helpful as well. Many thanks.
