DCS 760 & Extension tubes

Have any of you guys used extension tubes with a wide-angle (18-35mm in my case) lens... I'm shooting some small objects & require the distortion of the 18mm, but can't focus close-up enough to fill the frame, so I tried using a 12mm extension tube. But now I've gone to the other extreme - to focus I need to virtually rest the front lens-glass against the object, and can no longer fit it in frame! I guess a 4mm or 6mm would do -but my local store says they don't exist. Does the slight difference in the plane of the CCD as opposed to film have anything to do with the problem? Please help!
