digital equipment question

Desired result: to INPUT analog video tapes from a Sony Hi8 Camcorder(8mm) and/or a Sony Hi 8 VCR ÖÖ..TO my IBM T23 Think Pad laptop computerÖÖand then to EDIT them with movie editing software.
The operating system is Windows XP Professional.
The laptop supports: PC card type I, II, III; 16-bit PC card; and has a USB port. The laptop does NOT have a firewire.
Input would be 20 minutes to 120 minutes -analog Hi 8, (8mm).
Questions: 1.What would be the best system to do this. -- easiest to set up-- to my
laptop. ; and
2. What would be the best video(and audio) editing software to use with
my laptop.
Reason for asking: Attempted to find out if either the USB INSTANT DVD BY ASD
Or the STUDIO DELUXE BY PINNACLE SYSTEMS would work and got lost in the
translation. They did not know if the would work with the laptop IBM T23 Think Pad
and were unsure of how to connect. Perhaps there is a simpler hookup OR if someone
knows if these products will work on this laptop without a technical staff to set up.

Hi!

1) How to get the video in?

You need a converter box from analog video & audio or Y/C to firewire (IEEE 1394). Than you can connect this (digital DV) output to a standard PCMCIA firewire card.

I dont't know if it's possible using the USB port, becaus of the datarate (5 Mbit/sec.)

2) The right software?

You might test a few. I would prefer the pinnacle software, because I'm using the Edition software.

3) Archiving?
Using the set up I suggest, you can play out to tape as well.

If you want to burn a video cd or DVD, you have to transcode the DV encoded video to MPEG (1 or 2). This transcoding needs a lot of processing power. Your laptop must be a pentium 3 800 Mhz or better to have a little fun.

I punched up the interface website...
and it refers just to VHS tapes to DV....
....
also, in the first part of your reply
you use "Y/C".....Does that mean

The nature of the analog source should not matter. Y/C refers to luminance and chrominance -- another kind of analog input.

TO GET THE VIDEO IN-if you have no firewire port on the laptop try a pcmcia firewire adapter (about $50-$70). the adapter will have a 6pin female plug insert. just get a cable that then adapts to both camera and pcmcia card. fairly direct then. the cable usually supplied with the camera is a 4pin to 6pin.
