Sigma DP1

It isn't quite here, yet, but some examples clearly exist, finally, and DPReview has just published some snapshots they made with one at PMA.

The snapshots look pretty decent!

Here's the official web site for the DP1.

Rumors are that it will enter retail in the neighborhood of $800 at some point this "spring".

Along the same vein, the second generation Ricoh GR Digital is supposedly now in the wild, although I haven't read a review of it. Sean Reid has posted a review, but you have to pay for it, and I'm not yet a subscriber of his.

Re: Sigma DP1

I think I could pocket one of those....

Interesting that it's very close in size (a bit wider) and lighter than the Canon G9, which is a pleasantly sized camera in my book.

I'm sure if it takes off, we'll see a rush of competitors relatively quickly. The DSLR market is down to a game of incremental gains in noise and resolution now, and the DP1 promises to throw the cat amongst the pigeons in the serious photographer P&S market.

I'd love one with interchangeable lenses, but not prepared to fork out Leica prices for an occasional camera...

Mike

Re: Sigma DP1

I have been waiting for the debut this camera for over a year. the Foveon sensor technology is a great concept, but has yet to be successfully incorporated in a camera.

The fixed 16mm f4 lens (28mm eqivalent) may be the downfall of this camera.

Jerry
It certainly keeps it from being useful to me.

I know that many will agree with you, but it seems to me that the best image quality is behind the core concept of the camera. The f4 lens really isn't a big deal if the higher ISO's produce great IQ, which those huge photosites should provide. Like everyone else, I wait with baited breath!

Cheers,
Hugh

Re: Sigma DP1

It's not f4 that's an issue for me, that's fine, it's the 28mm focal length.
