Re: Sigma DP1

I agree. F4 is neither here nor there for my purposes, but the focal length is very 'in-between'

Why couldn't they make it a 24mm or even a 21mm?

Mike

Re: Sigma DP1

Now available for pre-order from Amazon. Now, what can I sell so I can afford it?

Yes, Amazon is reporting the DP1 as shipping on March 25, and costing $800. I'm not sure how seriously to take that date, given the DP1's history.

And what of the comparable Ricoh GR Digital II that is already shipping?

Clearly, Sigma was actually plotting the downfall of their own belabored product from the get-go when they chose a 16mm prime. Lord knows, no serious photographer—certainly none willing and able to shell out $800 for a point-and-shoot—would ever consider buying a point-and-shoot with such a FOV!

Look, this camera may turn out to stink, but it won't be because it has a fixed focal length or the "28mm equivalent" FOV!

Re: Sigma DP1

Looks like it is finally hitting the streets.

Reports from DP1 users are beginning to show up on dpreview and elsewhere. There's some good samples and video (surprisingly good) here: Carl Rytterfalk Fotografi

Not seeing anything that would stop me buying it over any other P&S at this point...

Mike.

Re: Sigma DP1

Holy smokes those high ISO images are nice (for a point-and-shoot)! I especially like the black & white ones!

Thank you for sharing!

The one thing I'm most worried about is shutter lag, which makes me crazy on point-and-shoot cameras. This thread on dpreview's forums suggests that the manual focus feature on the DP1 is well-implemented and responsive, and that shutter lag is nominal when used with manual focus but somewhat noticeable in autofocus.

Oh, by the way, the DP1 web site has been updated again with more content and sample images.

Re: Sigma DP1

I thought it was interesting to read this morning on DPReview that Olympus has introduced a new DSLR designed to be a small and light as possible. Even so, it's significantly larger and heavier than the DP1, even if you start hanging accessories on the DP1, such as an external viewfinder or flash unit.

Sigma DP1: 113mm x 59mm x 50mm; 250g
Olympus E420: 129mm x 91mm x 53mm; 380g (without lens)

On the plus side, it's good to see Olympus at least trying to justify its continued existence.

Re: Sigma DP1

Sensor Sizes:
Olympus 4/3rds sensor: 17.3x13mm
Nikon D Series: 23.7x15.6mm
Sigma DP1 Sensor: 20.7x13.8mm

DP1 is not on this chart, but you can see where it sits:

(from dpreview)

Pixel Pitch:
E3: 4.7um
DP1: 7.8um

DP1 has the Foveon sensor of course, just so that comparisons get difficult.
