But what about the zoom? Wouldn't the shoe-mounted finder be accurate at only one focal length?

I don't use a case for my G9. I just hang it around my neck for those quick shots. I love the two custom settings on the top dial that allow you to quickly set the camera without fumbling through the menu. I can't use the optical viewfinder, it is just too poorly designed. You really need to learn a different way of shooting with the LCD as a viewfinder. I find it is good for those overhead crowd shots, with a large angle of view the LCD is very useful in these awkward situations. The face detection function works extremely well, even locking on pictures of faces!

Yes, but I rarely if ever zoom, so it works for me.
