Re: Canon G9 - The Perfect Travel Camera?

Yes, the lens does retract. I got one today. I'm going to compare it to the S5, which I took on my last trip. I liked it. It's long lens equivalent (400mm) and IS really makes for a good combination. Slightly heavier than the G9 and does not retract the lens. No RAW mode, however.

Jonathan - thanks for making these sample images available. I wonder if you could be persuaded to make the RAW files available so we can work them up in our own way?

Re: Canon G9 - The Perfect Travel Camera?

Just purchased a G9 today, with the intention of shooting raw. My favorite raw converter, SilkyPix, does not yet support the G9, so I converted the raw files to .dng format so I can use SilkyPix. Now we are rocking, these G9 raw conversions are sooo much better than jpegs from the old G7 with just a little care and attention to the decode settings. Not a high ISO camera, but I think good enough for some stock work. Clearly the G9 is the camera Canon meant to release with the G7

Quentin

PS also got the wide angle converter, but not yet tried.

Re: Canon G9 - The Perfect Travel Camera?

The G9 performed well as a dslr replacement on a trip to Nice. Here is a link to a sample, converted from raw using SilkyPix

Re: Canon G9 - The Perfect Travel Camera?

I picked up a G9 from Circuit City yesterday and had a day to explore the functions and software. From what I have read in the forums, most people that have tried the G9 did not install the bundled software that includes an updated Canon Raw converter. The converter is accessed through the Canon ImageBrowser utility (on a Mac) and has an "adaptive noise control" that is key to producing great high iso images with the G9. While people may prefer third party converters, support for the G9 is not there yet. The Canon Raw Image Task converter was developed for the G9 and files can be converted to 16bit Tiff, EXIF-Tiff (8bit) or EXIF-Jpeg.
