I'm interested in raw files from this camera. Jpegs I know are not going to be good enough based on the G7 and samples of jpegs I have seen from the G9. As and when SilkyPix supports the G9, I would like to think it might be just about good enough as a carry anywhere camera, but I was sorely disappointed with the G7, which I gave to my 13 year old son.

Re: Canon G9 - The Perfect Travel Camera?

Well it's hard to look at any other files after getting used to my 1ds.....

To me it looks like these digicams keep being designed in the same rut. But I'm in the market for a camera for my son (who's 8) and am having trouble deciding betweent the G7 and a Rebel GTXi - at about the same price point seems like the only feature that distinguishes them is the ability to go in the pocket!

I'd like to se a 35mm 1.8 lens on a 8mp sensor that's APS sized so the high ISO noise wasn't so bad. Put that in a rangefinder style body that can take a knocking and we're good to go. It would be killer if they offered a fast 50 and 100mm lens as well. I'd pay $1500-2000 for that kind of sensor/lens/body combo as long as it shoos raw. I don't know if they're afraid of breaking out of the 'price points' that have been established but I hope it comes down the product pike at some point.

Re: Canon G9 - The Perfect Travel Camera?

Hi everyone -

I promised earlier to post some G9 RAW files this week. I've been shooting away, but when I went to install the software, the CD was missing from the box! Unfortunately, Canon doesn't have it available from download (I wasn't able to find it anyway). The dealer is going to get some in next week and has promised I can borrow a CD then. If anyone is interested in jpegs, let me know and I'll post some.

I showed it to a friend of mine who is very picky about shutter lag, and he's going to buy one - a pretty good endorsement since he hasn't bought a new P+S since his Fuji E990

Wouldn't the latest version of DPP be able to handle the RAW files? That's downloadable.

Re: Canon G9 - The Perfect Travel Camera?

Adobe just posted LR 1.2 which can read G9 Raw. I've converted a few and posted them (full-size tiffs with no adjustments made in LR) at

Index of /G9

These are at iso 200, 100 and 80

They're no 5D files, but i'm impressed. There's a very small amount of fringing, but they are sharp and not noisy at all at iso 80/100. 200 has an acceptable amount of grain for me, though it is noticable in the shadows. 400 has noticable grain, but not too bad, I have to say. I haven't shot at 800, and 1600 is pretty noisy, but it's not all that ugly - if you were a fan of pushing b&w film, you won't be bothered. It's not as bad as Recording Film - about where Tmax p3200 was maybe.

The feel of the camera in my hand is very good. As with the G7, it is solid, and simple to use. The new LCD is fantastic, even in full sun. The optical viewfinder is not as accurate as it could be.

Autofocus, as noted in earlier posts, is very fast, but you have to turn off Image Stabilization. The AF assist works well in low light - slower than in full sun, but not by much. The shutter lag, especially if you pre-focus, is hardly noticable. There are some quirks to the AF which I haven't quite figured out yet - it's faster in some situations than in others.

This is my new favorite camera. I've been turning off the lcd to save batteries, then shooting with the optical finder, making sure to compensate for the finder.

If anyone has a specific test they'd like me to do, I'll try to.

Re: Canon G9 - The Perfect Travel Camera?

The files look good, Jon. It's not clear from the reviews I've read, but I'm assuming it's pocketable, i.e., the lens retracts, etc. Is that true? I may have to have one.

It is pocketable. The lens retracts. It fits into my pants pockets easily, and just barely into a shirt pocket.
