Canon and the E18 error

I had a S400 canon, nice little camera until it started getting the E18 error, which indicates problems related to lens extension/retraction. The canon repair fee of $150 if you were out of warranty (mine was just over 1 year old) turned my S400 into a disposable camera.
I'm considering a new point and shoot for my wife, anyone aware if the canons are still getting the dreaded E18 error on the newer cameras, like the SD700IS, SD800IS, SD1000, or have they fixed this problem?
