Re: Advice for point & shoot

I saw that Drew. It seems a nice camera. I prefer a P&S with a zoom, but it is definitely an option.

"I prefer a P&S with a zoom"

I wonder if anyone has attempted to calculate how much definition you have to give up to move from fixed to zoom?

I must say that after using my wife's GRD for two Italian holidays I cannot think of the time I could not get near enough to what I wanted to photograph. And, walking to a more suitable camera point brought back of some of the fun of photography I remember from being a kid.

Re: Advice for point & shoot

From a sports shooters perspective, it's always nice to have a zoom. That said, I narrowed my choices to the Canon SD800 IS and the Canon 700 IS. From this thread, which summarizes others I've read, I decided on the longer lens from the now discontinued SD700 IS.

Canon SD800 IS Digital ELPH Review: 11. Conclusion & samples: Digital Photography Review

It's still available from Amazon and Adorama. I just received mine and haven't had time to even charge the battery. Will try to report back after some testing.

PS By the way, it has an optical viewfinder, as does the 800, but JPEG and no RAW mode. Since I shoot such a high volume of images in my sports work, I often use JPEG anyway, so am comfortable with it in this situation.

Re: Advice for point & shoot

Ricoh has launched the Caplio GX100.

On paper the GX100 looks good (raw, 24-70 (35 mm eq.), ISO 1600 (I doubt it is usable), hot shoe, removable optical viewfinder, removable electronic viewfinder, stabilized CCD ...).

If the lens is good, the 400 ISO performance nice and the operation is fast and accurate (focus, shutter, writing speeds, etc) then it could be the one.

Any of you has experience with the GX8? How good is it?

Raul.
