Re: Which Digital Point & Shoot for Wife on Vacation?

"carrying the camera about with the viewfinder attached?"

No problem. You mention a Ricoh case. I don't think that they chuck one in with the camera in the UK anyway. I just found one in my cupboard that is full of cases coming from assorted bits of kit over the years.

"Will the camera fit in a pocket?" Yes. Depends on which pocket of course! However I'm always wary of dust in anything other than a shirt pocket so I'd feel happier to have the camera in a thin case.

Look at that little Voigtlander viewfinder in this picture:-
Re: GRD and voigtlander viewfinder (some pics): Ricoh Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

As I think I mentioned earlier I have the Ricoh, but should have bought the small Voigtlander.

RAW.

Yes, correcting bad exposure is one reason for wifely RAW shooting. My wife has no concept as to what the assortment of buttons and nurled rings can do. She, by accident, dialled herself two stops of underexposure and then took masses of jpgs. I managed to get something out of them, but agree I'd have stood far more of a chance with RAW.

Maybe we more experienced photographers 'need' a faster recovery speed than the ten seconds it takes the GRD to write its RAW. I guess the way to find out whether it bothers my wife is to swop the camera to RAW and see if she grumbles she is missing that essential second shot.

For processing the RAW I did experiment with, I think, the free version of Silkypix. I was actually trying to see whether you got better low light results with RAW on the GRD. I did not do a lot of work on it, but came to the conclusion that it made no difference to working with jpgs - and there is an odd quirk that you can go to 1600 with jpgs and only 800 with RAW.

OK?

Tony

Re: Which Digital Point & Shoot for Wife on Vacation?

Hi,

Best known for watches and calculators, but Casio make some nice point and shooters. Quick start up and response, good image quality. Problem with most of the newer ones is no viewfinder.
I use an F5, D2h and a pair of D70s but have a Casio Pro EX-P600 in the car at all times. 6MP with a 4x Canon zoom lens. I got it on eBay with case and 256Mb card for €130 delivered. At the time it was €450 in the shops. Would not part with it now. In fact, I sold a Nikon 8700 after I got the Casio as the response was so much better. Check the reviews on Steve's Digicams. He likes the Casio Ex-S600 Steves Digicams - Casio Exilim EX-S600 - User Review
I think that if super image quality, low noise, good low light performance etc. is required, then either the cost is prohibitive or one may as well buy a dSLR.
I regard the P&S digital as I would any 35mm P&S - it ain't no F5 and never will be.

Re: Which Digital Point & Shoot for Wife on Vacation?

Frank,

You say " She has a 23 year old Nikon P&S", so I'm guessing your wife 'might' be old enough to need reading glasses. No offence meant!!!

"Problem with most of the newer ones is no viewfinder."

This viewfinder concern is not a fad or fashion concern.

Both my wife and I do use reading glasses and we would find it totally impossible to frame (let alone focus) a camera which only had a rear LCD.

Nobody should underestimate the implications - least of all the design gurus who are dreaming up the dream p&s for 2008.

Anthony is right to mention Casio. I'd love to be able to pop one of those in my shirt pocket. Snag is that I'd not be able to take photos with it.

Thank goodness Ricoh had the foresight to stick that hot shoe on top.

Rgds

Re: Which Digital Point & Shoot for Wife on Vacation?

Tony,

You are correct, she is 49 and does need reading glasses. I have looked around and decided that the G7 is too much for her, and that the Canon Power Shot SD900 might be about right. We leave Sunday for Acapulco so I have got to get my hands on one today to make up my mind. Otherwise, I will stick with the Nikon P&S and, "gasp", FILM!

Thanks to all for the input,

Frank
