Re: ANYONE have the story on the Canon Powershot G6

The reason the 24-105mm f4 L lens does not work with Canon's teleconverters is because Canon's teleconverters have a protruding front element which is optimized for the optical design of Canon's telephoto lenses. This limitation has been in place for a very long time in the Canon system, long before we even had digital SLRs, and it has no bearing on the technical (optical) feasibility of a point-and-shoot camera with a larger sensor! Epson has shown with the RD1 that it can be done, and with lenses that have been around for 70 years or more, and Leica is reportedly working on a digital rangefinder. The problem is economic - can enough large-sensor point-and-shoots be sold at an affordable price to recoup development costs and make a profit? Not quite yet (the RD1 is so expensive it is practically a boutique item) - but I think we may be reaching a level of commoditization of the digital components where the development and production threshold might soon be crossed, and we could see some pretty interesting and affordable new cameras as a result.

BTW Kenko makes teleconverters that will work with the 24-105mm f4 L lens on a 5D. I have the "Teleplus Pro 300 DG" 1.4x converter and it works quite well. I use it when I just can't lug a second lens along.

Re: ANYONE have the story on the Canon Powershot G6

Samuel et all,

I'm selling my G6 which is near mint with all accessories, box, manual, etc. Approximately 300 shutter activations. I have positive feedback posted on photogon.com, audiogon.com, & ebay.com. Since there's interest here, I hope no one minds my posting this. Please send a private message for details.

Alan

I doubt anyone has any problem with you posting this, but wouldn't it be more appropriate in the Trading Post section?

If I put the G6 in a bag it always seems to get jostled and turned on so that the battery runs down--verey annoying! I have a couple DSLRs so the G6 just sat in a drawer this past year.

I'm looking for a good pocket camera and considering the Ricoh GR Digital since reading about it in this forum. Wondering though if I should hold off and wait for the next version to see if they do anything about the noise issue that everyone talks about. (By the way, the G6 also is very noisy above ISO 100.)

I have a feeling that there may be something better coming along in a little while.
I agree with this post. I have one SOLELY for the RAW capabilities...it seems this is the last generation of PNS RAW availability. I mostly bring this for extreme adventure stuff and it is cumbersome. I bought the wide angle converter and it mostly satisfies my needs..but, everything has to be just right for it to actually end up in my stock library.

Re: ANYONE have the story on the Canon Powershot G6

That was my post. I'll stand by what I said. I loaned my G6 to a friend and he hasn't had time to even try it. So I posted here that I want to sell it because a couple folks were looking for one.

I used to shoot assignments with a Canon G3 when I was transitioning from film to digital. Nothing wrong with the image quality from these cameras. It all boils down to what you want.

Heck if I had my druthers, I'd still be shooting Tri-X and developing it in D-76. It was simple, cheap, and reliable.

Re: ANYONE have the story on the Canon Powershot G6

the G2 was my first digital, and produced stunning results when well exposed/shot RAW. are you moving up from the G2 b/c of MP size? those later G's I found to be extremely noisy.

check out the Pro 1 as well, seen some nice stuff off that...

personally, the Ricoh GR is the way to go IMHO. no zoom tho? I had a film version and it was amazing. well outperformed the nikon 35 & 28 ti (peers of that film era) for half the price!
