Weird Pro 1 Anomoly

I had a strange experience with my Pro1 yesterday while I was calibrating my new spherical RRS pano head. The easiest way to align the camera on the head is to point the camera straight down and then center the panning clamp screw hole in the square that is in the center of the viewfinder. While I was doing this, I tried several different focal lengths to see what the easiest method would be. What I found was that while one focal length would be centered perfectly (say 100mm) when I zoomed out, the center point would shift slightly up or down or left or right.

Is it wrong to assume that centered at one focal length should mean centered at any focal length.

thanks
