GR focus speed

The autofocus is closer to .2 sec. I couldn't say precisely. It has a feature where if you just mash the shutter button it exposes, doing the best job it can on focusing. Given the 28mm focal length equivalent approximate focus is usually good enough.

Re: GR focus speed

Hi Woody,
Thanks you very much for all your comments.
I can't wait to hear from you next week!! Mine still hasn't turned up at the shop; maybe this week.
Given your short time with the camera, taking into account all your comments, if you were in my shoes, would you cancel the order or not??! (I'm a press photographer and will use the camera as an emergency camera when I don't have my kit to hand).
I'm planning on using my external Leica 28mm finder - I think this should work???
Lastly, what's the continous shooting speed at jpeg fine? Oh, also, if you have the capability, would it be possible to see some samples (jpeg, at 400ASA and above??

Thanks again,

Edmond

Re: GR focus speed

I went into a shop here in Sweden today and tried the GR for a few minutes. It certainly looks and feels nice! The autofocus speed (tested indoors) was bit slow though.... felt like 0,5-1sec, but probably given the very small sensor and wide angle lens this camera hardly need autofocus for other than macro shots...;-) Why not set it to 1 meter fixed or something like that to get 0.5m-infinity focus and never use the AF!? (I dont understand why the AF is so slow on all these small P&S, when the need for accurate focusing is so little....)

Anyway, the camera WILL take a picture and not bother focusing if you just press the button hard directly, so this is probably OK...wonder what distance it uses then...?

Re: GR focus speed

OK, for anyone following this thread:

The camera controls are very cleverly laid out and usability is superb. WB, exp comp and ASA settings are very easy and quick to change, without having to go through the menu system. Focusing speed is superb, and the quick "snatch" capability on the shutter release is really useful.
I have yet to take any serious pictures with it, but so far the exposure and WB are really very good.
As I get to use the camera more, I shall post more thoughts if they are asked for.

Edmond

Re: GR focus speed

Hi Edmond
I'd be very interested in any thoughts on the GR Digital. I've been following this and various DPreview threads for a while. I was about to go for a Fuji F11 but there is something very appealing about the GR (its black for a start). Apart from speed of use and general image quality I'm also interested in how good/bad the noise is at higher iso's (like everyone else on the planet seemingly). Samples I've been able to find on the web so far haven't been great, but perhaps expectations are unfairly high. I'd also like to know how it does with portraits. I know being a wide angle that portraits are perhaps not what its intended for (apart from environmental ones maybe), but I'd still love to see how it handles that kind of subject matter.
I'm probably just going to have to buy one of the darned things...
