Something like the Ricoh GR-1

I asked a Nikon rep recently if Nikon had any plans to produce a fixed focal length, fast aperture, compact digital, not unlike the 28ti or 35ti. No dice was his response. I traveled Europe several times with a bag full of Nikon gear and 9 out of 10 times I grabbed the GR-1. You could set the focus, and fire away. Plus they made little filters for the thing.

Maybe one of these days when sensor sizes max out they will make a nice little digital gem like that. Maybe even smaller - with a faster lens, and faster response time. I would love a 21mm, too. With an 8 megapixel sensor. Sorry - I am starting to sound like a few other posts.

Re: Something like the Ricoh GR-1

A digital GR-1 would be my perfect digicam too, but in the meantime, I've just bought Ricoh's GX digital compact.
With a 28-85mm lens (which defaults to 28mm), very quick startup and little shutter lag, 5megapixels, in a black metal body similar in shape to my GR-1, I think this is the nearest thing at the moment to a digi Gr-1.

Re: Something like the Ricoh GR-1

Andrew,

I haven't been able to try one out, but it looks good on paper. I would love to try one. I never printed any negatives from my GR-1 any larger than 8x12, so I am sure 5 megapixels would suffice. Hard to go back to five being so used to 16. But I suppose it is like comparing 35mm to my 6x7's and 4x5's - each has it's place.

Would you send me a couple files from that camera, or post them and send me the link? I would like to see one full size, from the 28mm setting, please. It would help me make some decisions. I am very interested in something like this.

If you go to my webpage www.robertwbarr.com, and look around - some of the more randon, spontaneous pictures were taken with the GR-1. I would set the focus to 6 feet and hit it when something came into range.

Cheers,

Rob

"and hit it when something came into range."

Which is one of the big questions.

Hit the Canon Pro 1 when something comes into range and take a photograph half, to a whole, second later.

No use for spontaneous pictures is what I am saying.

But maybe the camera we are talking about is different.

Re: Something like the Ricoh GR-1

The "lag" was and is my problem with all of the compact cameras I have tried. I want quick - no focus, nothing - just "click". I hope this one or something soon address this issue.

Re: Something like the Ricoh GR-1

When I'm not shooting assignments I'd also prefer a smaller "gem" camera. In the film days I had so many to choose from; Contax T-vs, Contax G2, Ricoh GR1, Konica Hexar. I'm amazed and disappointed that there are no digital equivalants. My wife has a Canon G5 which is ok but the shutter lag is killer.

Apparently, Ricoh are planning to bring out a digital GR-1 next year!
According to posts on DPReview's forums, and on Japanese websites, at their stand at Photokina, Ricoh showed a GR-1 with a teasing silouette alongside saying "the story continues, 2005"

Can't wait! Possibly to be revealed at the Focus show in the UK, Feb 2005?
