The above image was shot using a Pro 1 during a camera test in a camera store to check out how well the camera would function in a candid, low-light, mixed lighting environment. I wanted to see how good things would look if the lens was at its widest angle setting (7.2 mm), wide open (f 2.4) and manually focused to about 5 feet -- which would provide a depth of field from about 3.5 feet to infinity. I also set the ASA to the slowest, best quality speed of 50 and shot in RAW, and in manual mode, so the camera didn't have to either calculate exposure or focus. With all the extra electronics turned off, the Pro 1 would go "click" (I turned off that noise, too!) within about 1/10th of a second. I decided to take advantage of the small sensor size which provides an advantage over the larger sensors, such as in my Canon 1D, when using an equivalent 28mm lens. To get the same depth of field result with my 1D and 28mm lens, I'd need to stop down to f 11 - 16 and then bump the speed up to ASA 800 - 1,600. If news or street "candids" are your thing, the Pro 1 just might be the hot ticket. Also, the S 1 doesn't gain much from image stabilization at wide angle, and gives up a lot in terms of resolution, lens quality, lack of RAW, color space, etc. However, the S1 cost a lot less than the Pro 1.
