clothing 3D no model

I have been asked to shoot clothing with no model or visible mannequin but filled out with body shape and so you can for example see the back of the garment through a V neck front. Any ideas on the best way to do it? There are examples of what I mean on this site - USA PRO - Womens fitness, sports wear, clothing and apparal. I've done this using a dress form, a saber saw, and some retouching. I was shooting a catalog for company that makes "scrubs" for medical professionals. They supplied me with a dress form of the same size as the sample clothing they were supplying. I took a saber saw and cut the neck area out of the dress form so that the back of the garment would show through the neck opening. I did minor retouching to remove any areas of the dress form that remained. Another tip is to get some good batting material from a fabric store. Some of the polyester batting can be molded into shape quite well... and will hold its shape.. while still being soft and springy to conform to the shape of the area of the garment that you're trying to fill. It's good for filling out sleeves and such in a believable way.

I guess my mind's in the gutter today... Had to read your caption twice to realize it wasn't "model, no clothing".

Given that my own expertise is in digital processing, my thoughts tend toward shooting the garments on human models then removing the people digitally - i.e., do the job mostly in Photoshop. Do some inside shots of the garments on hangers or being held up to get the data for the views through the neck, etc.

I would use a live model and have them wear something underneath that is not a color used in the garment, such as a chroma green turtleneck. Then, you can remove the neck and body areas very fast in PS.

The back of the neck would require a second shot taken on a mannequin. I personally found shooting mannequin to be very time consuming compared to a live model. The garments never seem to look good or fit correctly on a form.

Thanks guys. Yu are pretty much confirming my thinking. Inexpensive form and cut away what you know you don't need or wireframe form and cut away then pad out retouch out any wire you may need to keep for shape. Also using spray starch to keep stuff in shape. Was hoping for one of those strokes of genius that hit you after you have done the job the long way.

I think some of the large companies use 3D modelling software. This isn't one of those.
