Photo Vest for advertising

I shoot part-time sports action photography as a press photographer at a large local high school. I have a full-time day job. My current business model is to shoot, edit and upload to a order fulfillment site (mine is Pictage). While everyone at the local high school where I am press photographer knows where to find the pictures (the High School has links to my site), when I shoot these events, I would like the other school to know where to find the pictures.

It is good that I have actually sold pictures to other schools who accessed my web site by going to the opposing team's website to find my photos. So, I am now more mindful to shoot not only the school who I am on the sidelines for, but to shoot partially for both teams. It is a delicate balance, as you don't want to short the team who placed you on the field in the first place.

Additionally, when not shooting my local high school, I would like to figure the best way to market the pictures on my web site. The problem of course is that people don't know that the pictures that you are shooting are available for purchase through the web.

Currently, once a game is shot, I send an email to the opposing team booster club or coach letting them know that there are pictures of some of their players from the recent game. They usually let the members of the booster club know. And I get some picture purchases from the other team. The thing about this is that parents and players cycle through and while they may always know to check your website, there are some parents that don't have this knowledge. So, my quest is to reach as many opposing or new customer people tastefully, without offending the customer who puts me on the field.

An idea I am entertaining is to buy a lightweight vest with my website advertised on the back and smaller on the front. This way, they can see me shooting and if interested check out the website. This may even help the parents at the local high school where I shoot to more easily access the pictures. I know I can lay out business cards at my local high school, where I am more known, but this would be hard to do at new events where I gained new permission to shoot.

I am thinking about starting to shoot tennis, swimming, baseball, motocross and anything else involving action, as I get time and study the best ways to shoot these events. Having a way to let them know where to find the photos is crucial to compensating me for my time to gain access and shoot events, as event promoters don't pay you to shoot. The lightweight vest option is something I can use whether it is hot or cold. I just slip it on and along with my Think Tank modular belt system, I have all my gear and can shoot most any sporting event.

So, my question is if you have any better ideas or if you can recommend a website for me to purchase different vests or hats or shirts that I can have my web address embroidered on it to wear to sporting events I shoot. I love ProPhoto Home for having the freedom to kick around some of these ideas. I'm sure that some of you guys have already tried these tactics and can provide much better ideas. I sure would appreciate your feedback and sorry for the long post!

Re: Photo Vest for advertising

Hi Ken
I had the same problem. Trying to figure out what would get peoples attention at the various games attended. I had my local embroidery shop print polo shirts with my logo on the back along with the word "photography" under it. she did this with a photo vest and a jacket also . When I`m shooting ,parents and other spectators see my back with the logo plainly visible. Hand outs were made up directing people to my website but I had trouble giving them out and shooting at the same time. My last baseball game went by the back of my polo shirt for advertising and produced 1300 hits on my smugmug web site; no sales, to which I attribute to the lousy economy. It seemed to me that most people would like a personal relationship with the photographer as when I have given the handouts and chatting a bit, I got sales. Developing a marketing method that works in this present economy is a challenge, so I would suggest doing what I`m doing; trying various ideas and going with what seems to work best. Nice to know of another shooter doing what I'm doing.

Re: Photo Vest for advertising

Thanks George for the response! The reason I was thinking of using a vest is because when I am on the field, I am fully engaged in capturing pictures. So, most of the time, all they see is my back. And the back of the vest may be a large enough surface to print my web address. And I don't want to be chasing people with my business card. Of course, I know some may be taken aback by this, turning myself into a marketing billboard, but I think if the right type vest is purchased and the lettering not too big and loud, that it would tastefully serve my purpose. And being lightweight (not a photovest with lots of pockets, as I already have a modular belt system for carrying my gear), I can wear it in hot or cold climates. It may also serve to get me in events easier, as no respectable parent would be carrying a monopod, with camera and 300 2.8 lens, modular belt system and vest to a sporting event, unless they were working the event. I still plan on gaining permission before I go, but sometimes people at the ticket gate haven't been informed.

Anyway, thanks again for the ideas!

Sounds like an excellent idea.

Leave all the extraneous stuff ("http://www.") off, and maybe even buy an additional short domain name (e.g., so you'll be showing something easy to see and remember like "KenLit.com").

Re: Photo Vest for advertising

Thanks George for the pictures. The shirt and vest look professional, not too overboard. And like Noel suggested, leaving off the "www." part is advisable. I am also on a quest for a vest, that is not a photo vest (as I already have my modular belt system I will be wearing (but more like a vest a retailer may wear, that is lightweight and I can throw on over a short sleeve shirt or even a jacket if shooting when cold). Maybe like the vests photographers have to wear to shoot something like the Superbowl. Like the ones in Canon's commercials where all the photographers are wearing red vests shooting a sports event. Not that I care for the red color. If I use a photo vest with pockets, I just think it would be a bit much. Anyway, if anyone knows of such vests, please let me know.

I still may get a few shirts made like the one's in your pictures. Thanks again for taking the time to make the pictures and post them!
