Re: bidding on a job

I was not implying that any poster was elitist or not real world - just commenting and suggesting a possible different way.

I regularly get cheques from images I shot in the nineties which are still being reused now

I am utterly convinced of the value of licensing images and never giving up copyright

HOWEVER

I sell a lot to really small people like local holiday parks, they would have to contact me for EVERY brochure or mail out they did

It became a pain for both me and them with lots of paperwork flying around for fairly low fees - maybe for a card with a 2000 print run

Having recorded emerging patterns of purchasing by these clients I have, with SOME of them, done deals where they can use an image in ANY output of thiers (excluding national advertising) i.e thier own brochures and mailshots for a FIXED period of time for a FIXED fee

So two years ago I invoiced them 10 times for 10 single uses

Last year I invoiced them 10 times for 10 single uses

This year I invoiced them ONCE for ten times the amount of a single use

Maybe they will use it eleven times maybe eight

The above approach seems just more efficient for both parties - and efficiency can lead to fair and sustainable competitive advantage

Is what I am doing WRONG ??? If so I need to know !

Or maybe this approach does count as "usage-based pricing" and there is being an intercontinental language mismatch

I am genuinely interested in opinion in this fast moving digital world - I am not trying to be antagonistic or suggest lowballing

---

I did notice that getty had a big Ad on thier homepage a while ago about introducing simpler licensing (no where did it say cheaper!) - I am sure they wont have costed this in a way that affects thier bottom line it may infact improve it through efficiency

Re: bidding on a job

Sorry Mr. Moore--I wasn't trying to flame you. I was being pre-emptive because I often get people who say "you don't know what it's like--you are in Southern California" and it just drives me loony. <g> Iwas being a bad, defensive broad. Mea culpa. <g>

Bundled usage is still usage, and that's just fine. It's when one starts calling it "unlimited use for X year(s)" and only charging what one would for (say) print ad use that it gets sticky.

I believe in making it easier for clients to use you, absolutely! If you can do that by offering bundled usage, go for it! Just be careful you don't go too far on the money side when trying to "help" the client.

Re: bidding on a job

No worries.

Its all about language - I like your "bundle" better than my "blanket"

I will be updating some of my phrases in how I communicate with me clients

You will have improved my product and therefore this forum is doing its job

I hope the original poster does not consider this off topic
