Using a TV for evaluating shots

Is the image you get on a TV connected to your camera's TV out (D70 in case that matters) good enough that it can be used to evaluate results without having to go into Photoshop? I'm trying to work out how to do a fairly high volume product shoot, something like a catalog I'd say and I'd like to be able to evaluate the shots without having to take the speed hit of using Nikon Capture and without having to move the images into Photoshop.

I know that for some purposes the answer will clearly be a resounding no. What I'm looking for is an improvement over the camera's LCD so that I can evaluate lighting and exposure and hopefully see the more major problems (loose threads, dust on the background, all the stuff that I seem unable to see on the set, but that glares in the capture ).

If the idea works, I'd appreciate input on monitors to use, brand, size, etc.

Many thanks, Doug

Re: Using a TV for evaluating shots

I realized that another approach to this would be a laptop that could display video in a window. It would be kind of nice since I could then switch to Photoshop if I needed to, perhaps using Image Capture to do the transfer.

Thanks again, Doug

A lcd monitor with a builtin tv tuner masy also have a composite input which would be plug and play in this instance. I've toyed with the idea, but done no research. Try compusa, bestbuy, etc and go in with your camera and cable and see if you can get what you are looking for. The other option is a composite to vga converter to use with ANY monitor. Could be a hassle tho.

OK

So I lied. Here is one at TigerDirect for 299.

Can't vouch for it in any way, but it exists. More probably too.

Let us know what solution you arrive at.

Re: Using a TV for evaluating shots

I've been toying with this idea myself. But if you're going to get a TV, it should be a traditional one--which are very inexspensive compared to the digital/plasma counterparts. What you'll find is that you pay a premium for thin and at 800x600, you will not be able to effectively evaluate anything but that you've captured something. The higer resolution models will cost considerably more and with that, each size will bring with it an additional cost.

Re: Using a TV for evaluating shots

Hi All,
I use a small 13" LCD connected to a D20 and 1DSmk2. I use it as if it
were a large polo. Only for the basics. Setup props compesition nothing else.
On the Canons it just displays what the back of the camera does.(the cameras LCD actualy go black).
I would not trust it for color or white balance at all. If you dont need that then it is great.
Clients don't have to look at the tiny little screen on the camera and smack into it causing endless grief and frustration. If you need to be sure of WB and color shoot tethered.
Best of luck.
