Re: asking for an advance

You are the only one that knows your cashflow. If you are shooting jobs that require high expenses, there is nothing wrong with asking for advances. I ask for advances when I have a new client or when their job has a lot of upfront expenses. I also believe that I should not fund a businesses project that has higher revenues than mine.

Re: asking for an advance

my agent aways gets 50% of production costs on all jobs over 10k, i dont think we have ever had a problem with that. i would get worried if they wouldnt, as it might indicate a bad payer. it also means we pay lower paid crew like assistants, makeup, set builders etc early, so everyone stays happy. this is in New Zealand, so i dont know how things may work there.
TV comersals over here always get a 1/3 up front, 1/3 when the comersal is completed, and final 1/3 at the following month.

Re: asking for an advance

50% of job or 100% of expenses(except editorial) Can't image being to embarressed to ask for an advance....The agency got one from the client, why should they not pass it on? My title is Troy House, Photographer not Troy House, Banker. You can not be expected to finance these corporations. Also, have in 10 years had maybe 1-2 clients balk at advance and we still worked something out. This is also why it's nice to have an agent or 3rd party to negotiate. t.
