equipment insurance

What do you all use to insure your equipment against damage and theft? My usual home and auto company doesn't offer equipment insurance (unless you get as part of their large, and very expensive complete business package). Since i make most of my money through photography it's not eligible to be under a home floater.

I looked at the insurance deal ASMP has, but again, its far more coverage than I need a too high of a premium. Is there anyone out there who just insures equipment without much hassle?

Re: equipment insurance

I just insured my equipment with State Farm using an "Inland Marine" policy (I believe that's what my agent called it). It's a replacement cost policy; $15k coverage for about $30/month. Not sure what other policies run. My whole insurance package (liability, workers's comp, separate coverage for my trailer, and the equipment) is $60/month. Seems like a lot until someone thieves $15k of equipment!

Re: equipment insurance

I use Tom C. Pickard & Co.

Got 2 mil in liability that follows me on location, 10k in rental insurance and 13k replacement value for all my camera gear. Also they include 3k for laptop and 3k for desltop computers. There is also some other bennies; office furniture, etc. In Utah, it cost me under $600 annual with a $500 deductable. Best deal I could find.

The underwriter is Fireman's Fund. My rep was a dream to work with. He is straight up and clear about coverage.

Here is his Info:

Re: equipment insurance

I have a Travelers policy through my agent (may alos have been Inland Marine underwritten at one time). It's an all-risk, full replacement value policy. Most insurance companies have a comparable policy, with little difference (that I've found) in price. The important things are: "all risk" (you drop the lens and break it, and they still replace), and "full replacement value" (meaning whatever the value insured is what they pay off, not depricated value, not replacemnt at their discretion/option).

Re: equipment insurance

Look up Hill & Usher online. They specialize in insurance for photographers IMO better understand our needs. I find them to be excellent.

Also, be careful with home insurance that crosses over into full-time business-use equipment (are you a hobbiest or a pro?) and be sure to have them define whether or not your equipment is covered under replacement or depreciated cost. Big difference.

Re: equipment insurance

a little bit OT - but I can't help mention it and I'm not working in the US so the feeling may be different - but here in Australia as a working photographer you'd be completely crazy not to have public liability insurance, some clients that I work for now demand proof of min. $10mill public liability cover as a condition of working with them. ( I have 20 mill )

I'd seriously consider the ASMP package - you get what you pay for in this world - no point in paying for insurance if you can't get any money when its claim time.
