I've had an NEC 2090UXi for a while, and have been very happy with it. Recently, I felt the need for a lot more screen real estate (mainly for a non-photo requirement - online mapping for an upcoming extended trek) I didn't want to buy something horrible though!
Long story short, I landed up with a Dell U2410. The chatter says that if you get a good one, they're not bad. It is a nice screen. I plugged it into the Mac and ran my Eye1-2 on it and even after repeated attempts, couldn't get acceptable colour on it. Even tinkering by eye was no good - as soon as I saved the profile, the screen went to crap. I gave up for a while, work to do etc.
This morning, I opened up the Displays prefs and selected the color tab, and started tinkering with the many available profiles - just switching between them. I quickly realised that switching profiles on the Dell preferences altered both the Dell and the NEC! WTF!
I ran some more calibrations with the same results, then I had a brainwave and switched the DVI cables on the back of the Mac, leaving the monitor connections alone. Presto! switching profiles on one monitor now only effects that monitor!
Something in the guts is not right. I dunno if it is only my machine or if this is common to all of them. I did put the Dell on the NEC cable when I installed it, only because that's where I wanted to put the monitor, and the Dell cable would not have been long enough to reach it.
So if you add another Monitor to a Mac Pro and colour management goes weird, you know one place to start looking.
Mike.
