Monitor Recommendation: post Artisan

Now that is seems my Artisan, needs a repair, should I repair it, or get a new monitor?

I have the Sony Artisan and a cheap NEC 19" for palettes etc.
I'm thinking of the 30" Dell or Sony.

I've read about the Eizo, but is it really necessary to spend so much thanks.

If I bail on Artisan I will miss the self calibrating.

My suggestion is to buy whatever Andrew Rodney and Jeff Schewe are using, which currently appears to be the recent self-calibrating monitors from NEC.

Re: Monitor Recommendation: post Artisan

Thanks Martin:
Can you please post a link to those? ( I may look into repairing the Artisan today) -- any idea what happened? flickering/popping...

Check it out: as I write this, everything is suddenly looking clear and not blurry again. But it may not last... so still need info on what happening. thanks!

You might wish to peruse this thread.

I believe the NEC monitors in question are the Multisync LCD3090WQXi-BK the Multisync LCD2490WUXiSV and possibly the MultiSync LCD2690WUXiSV. Key is the SpectraView package, which is bundled with the two smaller monitors but is an add-on for the 30" unit.

Re: Monitor Recommendation: post Artisan

I heard Sean Reid reviewed a monitor, but I didn't pay the few $$ yet, needed to access his review pages.

Shootsmarter.com has been reviewing monitors and calibrators for quite some time. You have to sign up and thereafter get e-mails from them, but it's free. They have comparisons of the newer LCD's. They like the Lacie 324 a lot. Shootsmarter also has comparisons of calibrators. They sometimes can have strong opinions.

Some of the NEC and possibly Lacie's can be bought with their own dedicated calibrator which supposedly doesn't even need the computer to work.

Sean Reid's review was a highly favorable review of the NEC Multisync LCD2490WUXiSV, which is one of the monitors that comes bundled with a calibrator. His review ends with "If this is the future of LCD monitors for photographers, I'll mourn the passing of the CRT a little less."

Re: Monitor Recommendation: post Artisan

thanks Martin:

Thanks, Curious, how does the NEC compare in quality to Eizo/Artisan.
I have a G5: I would also need to buy a new video card?
Curious if if self calibrates like an Artisan, ie, you put the puck on and leave the room and it's done.

Does anyone know what all that flickering/popping I was getting on my Artison Monitor was?? It seems to have settled down now.
