Re: apple 30\" display

the ATI x1300 XL runs one dual link (30") DVI and one single link DVI and costs around $79
the x1600 XL does the same at higher level, and is around $160
the x1800 XL runs two dual links (two 30") for $325

times have changed.

Re: apple 30\" display

I'm using an ATI Radeon X800-XT Mac Edition with a dual 2.0 (6 Gigs of RAM) and Aperture runs OK. The loupe tool is a little slow to load a new image but most everything else is quite snappy.

Re: apple 30\" display

I have the apple 30" cinema display and was very happy with it for the time I have it now. It is right next to my quato 21" that is (a bit) better for colorcritical work. I work in a dual-head setup retouching on the 30" and proofing on the quato. To be honest the colors are very close. I guess 99% of the people in the field would be happy with the 30" apple.

Prints on my Epson 4800 look exactly the same as on the Apple screen and I'm not running a RIP or something.

Yesterday I received the new 30" DELL display, calibrated it and looked at some of my lately retouched photos. The Dell seems to be at least as good as the apple and it even looks good. I don't know if it looks better than the apple but beside the Dell logo it looks very appealing. It even has a stand that can be adjusted in height whereas the apple is fixed.

Currently my feeling is that it would be silly to get an apple 30" if you can get a newer Dell 30" for less money. And one tiny detail I really like about the Dell display is the built in powersupply. So you only put in a cable and there's no external powersupply-brick on the floor like with the apple.

My next step is to purchease a new VGA adapter to run those two 30" displays in a dual head setup and a dvi switchbox to allow a second pc use the Dell display as well.

Sadly the display only features one DVI connector. A second one wouldn't hurt, Dell!

After that I'm going to try to get the vga driver rotate the display by 90 degrees so I can view my Canon 1Ds MK2 files in a higher resolution and the right direction. The stand of the 30" Dell does not allow rotation but specs tell it can be used on VESA mounts.

Cheers

Boris
