I'm sure she's probably aware of the many different ways to postpone these payments.
In a situation like this, the last thing she should be worrying about is paying back student loans.
Years ago, in another life, I worked at SFA (Student Financial Assistance) in DC on a consulting project.
She may want to look into one of the following:
forbearance (government pays any interest during non-payment period)
deferment (you pay interest, or capitalize it)
economic hardship (i forget what happens to the interest here)
These are usually very simple to get and you do not have to have a federal direct loan to get them.
