Re-Evaluating the Canon 7D

So, after my initial disappointment over the 7D not being full frame, I've talked to a lot of my fellow pro photog friends and realize that the 7D as a crop sensor DSLR was probably a good move for Canon. Still not sure I agree with calling it a 7D, but my good friend Peter Gregg of A Better Bounce Card Fame had some excellent points for why Canon called it the 7D and where the Canon DSLR lineup is going.

Re: Re-Evaluating the Canon 7D

You can't really evaluate or re-evaluate until you have actually used the Canon 7D. Until then your opinion is conjecture and seems like a veiled attempt to re-direct viewers to your forum.

Re: Re-Evaluating the Canon 7D

Hm, what part of the amazing 5D Mark II don't you like that you are so disappointed that the 7D isn't even better?

Are you disappointed that Canon is continuing to release cameras that compete soundly with Nikon? Hey, this is good for us all!

Mods, is there merit to these posts? Matt clearly works for Nikon and/or has some kind of serious vendetta against Canon. Maybe he's hoping to get free Nikon gear with this kind of behavior. He doesn't seem savvy enough to realize people aren't following his links from these posts.

And what's wrong with "crop" cameras? I'll wager I can make better pictures with my 40D than you can with any full frame camera you have, at least sometimes.

Re: Re-Evaluating the Canon 7D

I for one, must admit to having actually followed one of these links for the first time (lesson learned). Having owned 9 various Canon DSLR bodies over the last few years, and currently owning a 50D, I am inclined to ask; Just what's so "flawed" about the 50D's auto focus system??

Sorry Matt, you've just confirmed my thoughts about many of blogs: Blogging

Re: Re-Evaluating the Canon 7D

Noel, I can assure I don't work for Nikon, although it probably would be a dream job. Not sure how you see my post as negative on the Canon as it's exactly the opposite.

As far as the 5D MkII is concerned, there are legitimate problems with its auto focus system that many 5D MkII owners are not happy about. To stick your head in the sand and pretend they're not real, or worse, to wave the Canon flag and proclaim absolute loyalty without a thought, is silly, even more for Canon shooters as they stand to benefit most if Canon addresses the issues.

As far as no one reading my posts and links, I'm generating a large portion of the activity on this forum Noel, so yes, I think a lot of people are reading my articles and posts. I also get about 10,000 visitors a month to the website, so a lot of people don't agree with you about the value of my articles. I won't bother responding to your snide comment about being savvy. I don't feel the need to fling personal insults at you. Feel free to continue if it makes you feel like a bigger person.

I never said there was anything wrong with crop cameras. Far from it, I shoot with D300 and D90 bodies, and I love them. I've also owned and shot with Canon 20D, 30D, 40D, and 5D DSLR's, and while I've got great images from all of them, they do have less than satisfactory auto focus systems.

Noel, are you throwing the gauntlet down? That's quite an arrogant wager, but I'll take you up on it anytime. You want a shoot-out, bring it!

Will, if you want a good example of the types of problems a lot of us have had with Canon gear, check out http://www.planetneil.com/tangents/2...-in-the-world/ and read Neil's HUGE list of problems with Canon gear down in the comments section.

I find it sad that you can only spout compliments and pro Canon propaganda around here unless you don't want to be personally attacked.

Well Matty,

Guess you missed the bit about owning/owned 9 Canon DSLR's. Sorry, I shoot around 60,000 frames per year on Canon bodies and actually earn a living doing it. So, I don't need to read other people's whining about the camera's shortcomings. Personally I think the XXD bodies' AF systems have been pretty dang good since the introduction of the 20D. Not perfect. But pretty dang good.

Sticking my head in the sand? Doubtful. Ask Chuck about some of the discussions we've had behind the scenes.

I certainly don't think these cameras are perfect.

But NONE of them are.

I think you could've contributed something useful to this site and the discussions here. But frankly, all too often your posts scream "Look at me Look at me", and sadly this time I took the bait.

At any rate, good luck to you and your blog.

Peace out.
