Canon 7D - Sad Day For Canon Shooters - No Full Frame, Just An Updated 50D

Well, I was wrong about the Canon 7D being full frame. A lot of us were wrong, and it's a sad day for Canon shooters. The 7D is little more than an update to the 50D. Hopefully the new auto focus system will be a success.

I mostly post full-frame pictures from my EOS 40D.

It is much more than an update of the 50D. It may not be your cup of tea (it isn't mine either), but it sure is an impressive camera.

Not sure what you mean by that Doug. The 40D isn't a full frame DSLR, so you can't be posting full-frame pictures from your 40D.

Not sure what your definition of much is Johan, but the 7D is little more than an updated 50D with a new auto focus system.

The auto focus system is the most exciting thing about the 7D because it gives Canon shooters hope that Canon has fixed their AF problems.

Re: Canon 7D - Sad Day For Canon Shooters - No Full Frame, Just An Updated 50D

Matt,

So sad for you, Canon produced a winner with this camera. Multiple built in focus screens via translucent lcd layer in the 100% view eyepiece, built in transmitter for multi flash, new 63 zone dual layer metering system, All cross point (19 point focus), HD video and 8 frames per second shooting speed separate the 7D from the 50D. It is more of a cross between the 5D Mark II and the 50 D.

With a host of brand new features designed to enhance every facet of the photographic process, from still images to video, the new EOS 7D represents a whole new class of camera. Made to be the tool of choice for serious photographers and semi-professionals, the EOS 7D features an all-new 18.0-megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor and Dual DIGIC 4 image processors, capturing tremendous images at up to ISO 12800 and speeds of up to 8 fps. The EOS 7D has a new all cross-type 19-point AF system with improved AI Servo AF subject tracking and user-selectable AF area selection modes for sharp focus no matter the situation. The EOS 7D's Intelligent Viewfinder, an entirely newly designed technology, provides 100% coverage and displays user-selected AF modes as well as a spot metering circle and on demand grid lines.

New iFCL Metering with 63-zone dual-layer metering system uses both focus and color information to provide accurate exposure even in difficult lighting. The EOS 7D also captures Full HD video at 30p (29.97 fps), 24p (23.976 fps) and 25p with an array of manual controls, including manual exposure during movie shooting and ISO speed selection. The EOS 7D features a magnesium alloy body that is dust and weather resistant and shutter durability of up to 150,000 cycles. Compatible with over 60 EF and EF-S lenses as well as with EOS System accessories, the creative opportunities--not just with stills but also with video--are beyond amazement.

Oh, I do. I just don't crop the image the camera takes - it's the "full frame".

You may be thinking of the term "full frame" as used to define a format size, which it will do but only if we specify the film size or type. For example, "full-frame 35-mm" describes a format size. "Full frame 8x10" describes a format size. "Full frame 120" describes a format size, albeit with some ambiguity.

"Full frame" by itself does not describe a format size, unless of course, for example, we were in a 35 mm film forum, in which context that might be a reasonable term.

Best regards,

Doug
