Actually I quit drinking coffee.
My problem with the 7D is that it's nothing short of a nice 50D update. It's nothing like what the photographic community has been anticipating and hoping for (i.e. full frame, eye controlled af, pro/semi-pro level camera reminiscent of the much loved Canon EOS 3.)
It does look like a great update to the XXD line. I'm glad Canon is trying to address their auto focus shortcomings with the new AF system in the 7D.
The increase in sensor resolution to 18 megapixels remains to be seen if it's a positive or negative move. If it's like the 50D's noisy increase in megapixels putting it at the bottom of the pack, it'll be a big negative for the 7D. Most folks don't need or want more megapixels.
Hopefully the 7D will be shown to be a great camera once we start seeing hands on reviews and real life images from it. I, along with many others, am just disappointed that the 7D isn't more camera like we'd hoped. YMMV.

Canon is arguably the smartest company on the planet. Maybe Nikon takes that prize occasionally... I think they send the trophy to one another monthly.
I can't believe you've condemned what looks like a great new body from Canon without any experience with it whatsoever, and perhaps without looking at a single image.
The APS-C sized sensor is actually quite a Good Thing. Those of us who have shot with sensors this size know of a lot of advantages. Technology marches on, and each time a "full frame" 35mm sized sensor is developed that trumps all comers, soon a smaller one with similar noise and dynamic range characteristics turns up. I'll bet the Canon 7D with it's measly 24mm sensor will kick the behind of a first generation Canon 1Ds, for example.
So what's not to like? If they push the "prosumer" (de-emphasis on the "sumer") models up like this, what do you think they're going to do to the luxury models?

P.P.S., It's a bit sad that a "controversial" post like Matt's has solicited more participation than the kinds of real photography-oriented things we used to discuss here.
I suppose this means that if you want people to read and get into a forum thread it should be titled completely wacky, like "Whatever Camera You're Using Really Sucks", or "Obama is Saving the USA One Taxpayer at a Time".

First of all, I don't think you speak for the photographic community as a whole. You speak only for yourself. Secondly, if that is what you expected, you know little about Canon's model strategy. A camera like you describe would no doubt be called EOS 3D, not EOS 7D. When the name 7D had leaked, anyone could have known this would not be that camera.
