Re: Canon 7D - Sad Day For Canon Shooters - No Full Frame, Just An Updated 50D

I've no doubt Canon will sell a few 7D cameras Jerry, but I'd hardly call the 7D a winner.

The 7D is little more than an updated 50D. Shoulda' been called the 60D. Canon added a few new features to the 50D, crammed in 3 extra megapixels into an already poorly performing sensor, and called it the 7D.

The 7D as Canon has released it is nothing like the one that's been wished for by many for some years now.

I guess it's a happy day at Nikon headquarters because all the folks waiting for a full frame 7D will now be looking much harder at switching to Nikon.

7D seems to be an innovative entry on the part of Canon. The new camera straddles the pro and prosumer markets at a price point that can satisfy the the needs of both targets.

Testing will show the level of actual innovation and performance.

Kudos to Canon!!

This is just silly.
Nikon has the D700; it has sensor approximating "full frame" 35mm.
Canon has the 5D Mark II; it has a sensor approximating "full frame" 35mm.

So I ask you: For anyone with a significant investment in Canon lenses and accessories, "switching" to Nikon (and presumably, based on your comments, the D700) would be an improvement in exactly what way(s)?

The rhetorical follow-up is "Why wouldn't those people buy a 5DM2 instead?"

It looks to me as though Canon has given APS-C shooters a much more professionally oriented camera. Previous versions seem to have been targeted to a mixed market, but the 7D seems to be a much more useful tool for the professional.

I think it is unrealistic to expect an update to the 5D Mk II so soon after it's introduction. The 7D looks like a winner to me.

It has a completely new autofocus system, it has a completely new exposure metering system, it has a new 100% 1.0x viewfinder, and it is much more whether sealed. What would you expect before you accept that this is much more than an update? A built-in coffee maker? A setting where the camera wakes up in the morning, walks out of the house and shoots that great sunrise while you're still sleeping?

That seems to be Matt's problem. The camera doesen't have his coffee ready when he rolls out of the wrong side of the bed.
