D30 SDK available?

I remember someone mentioning that Canon had made their Software Development Kit available for 3rd party solution developers. Would anyone that mentioned this please post more information here?

Re: D30 SDK available?

Canon has produced an SDK that allows third party developers to include functions similar to those found in the Canon Digital Camera plug-in module, including the processing of RAW files with the same control over sharpness, WB and other parameters that are settable in Canon's plug-in.

Canon's Chuck Westfall indicated to me yesterday that it had already been sent out to one developer for evaluation, so it's available. Whether 3rd party developers see value in it is another story; only time will tell. It had been previously announced that this was a Windows-only SDK.

Re: D30 SDK available?

It maybe released as part of the PowerShot SDK. (I remember a post on DPReview to this effect.) I've joined the program, but it takes them quite a while to process your application. I running tests at the moment to see if the existing software will read D30 RAW images.

Re: D30 SDK available?

Hi, Les:

Canon Digital Camera SDK 3.4 which supports the EOS D30 and all PowerShot cameras introduced to date is available through Canon USA to software developers residing in the Americas.* If you're interested in receiving a copy of it with documentation, please submit an application online at:
http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/...r/develop.html

(*There's a different web site for European developers. See web page above for the link.)

Please be advised that the current SDK is designed for Windows environments only. No other operating systems are supported yet, though we've already passed along requests for a Mac version.

Additionally, Canon Inc. has not released a detailed spec on the D30 RAW file format. The
current SDK only allows RAW files to be processed with the same API that's
available in the standard TWAIN driver. In other words, you can achieve the same level of functionality that's already available, but you can't modify processing speed or color values beyond what's available in our current drivers. Again, we've asked Canon Inc. to clarify their position on the release of a detailed spec on RAW files, but there's been no response yet.

Best Regards,

Chuck Westfall
Manager/Technical Information Dept.
Camera Division/Canon U.S.A., Inc.

Re: D30 SDK available?

Chuck,

I think it is great to get direct Canon fedback in this forum! I will hopefully have soon a first look at a 3rd party tool to enhance D30 photos.

Re: D30 SDK available?

Chuck is one of the big reasons I switched from the Nikon D1 to the D30. The difference in tone, the quickness of response, the obvious concern for the user are the reasons I feel more comfortable using Canon products.

Re: D30 SDK available?

Just spoken to the European PSDK, and version 3.4 will be release in the next couple of weeks.

I've been using version 3.2, but it only returns 8-bit data from the CRW files :-(
