AE* Custom function

I have just figured out how I need to configure the Autofocus and Power off selections for the sports photography I do. I have it set up so I focus with the shutter release but override with the AE lock button, but when configured this way the camera will not allow me to use AE* lock button to preflash FE lock. Is there a way this can be configured to allow.

In a situation where FE lock would not be advantageous because of subject location and composition, will a exposure derived from FE lock be identical to one using straight ETTL? In other words, is the sensor location and nature the same in both modes?

Re: AE* Custom function

The D30 lacks a dedicated FE Lock button, so no, there's no way to have FE Lock and use the AE Lock button for focus control.

When you engage FE Lock, the flash output is spot-metered around the focus point (actually, I don't know yet if it's the centre focus point always, or the active focus point always - on other cameras there is a custom function that controls this).

When shooting non-FE Lock flash photos, then a wider portion of the scene is taken into account when determining flash exposure. In the EOS-1n, for example, the frame is divided into three broad zones for the purpose of calculating E-TTL flash exposure. I don't know yet how the D30 divvies up the frame for this purpose.

Re: AE* Custom function

Re: FE Lock. According to the manual, you focus on subject with manually selected point and then place the center focus point on subject to be exposed by flash and press the FE lock button for pre-flash. It would seem logical that you keep shutter pressed halfway to keep subject in focus. Recompose and trip the shutter. This may require some dexterity until you get used to it.

I think this is same for other EOS series cameras.

I played with manually selecting focus points and seeing if flash exposure was linked to third of screen covered by focus point. D 30 seems to be reading flash at area of manually or automatically selected focus point. This consistent with my experience with EOS 1-N, A2 and EOS 3.

By the way. Have you learned (a warning note in manual) that the 550 and other EX series of flashes are only flashes to work automatically with D30. My 540 EZ will zoom head but no flash unless you set it to manual output mode. A real downer and a first for Canon. My EOS 1-N will work with TL, EZ and EX flashes.

EZ-Flashes can't work, because there is no TTL-Flash-Sensor at all in the Mirrorhousing of the D30.

E-TTL uses the ambient-metering-system with a preflash fired befor the mirror flips up. So you can always see the preflash through the viewfinder.

In case of the D30 it is a 35-zone sensor linked to focusing points.

And Rob, the EOS 1n ist not able to use E-TTL, it is the good old TTL with the 3-zone TTL-Sensor reading of exposure on the filmsurface.

Re: AE* Custom function

From what you said I deduce that a different sensor (or set of sensors) determines the exposure in FE lock than in E-TTL. Right?

Re E-TTL and the EOS-1n, meant to say the DCS 520/D2000, which use a modified EOS-1n body, and does support E-TTL. Sorry for the mistake.

Re: AE* Custom function

No Les,

for E-TTL and FE it is only one sensor, the ambient-light-metering system build in the pentaprism.

For good old TTL there is a diffrent sensor reading of the amount of light for filmsurface when shutter is open and the cuts flashpower when it think it is enough.

E-TTL is jugded by the Preflash, wich TTL doesn't need.
