So folks.. whilst waiting for my lottery ticket in the 5DMkii queue to go "bing"... I have finally gotten around to wondering if my 10D is "dying"...
I guess until the replacement was "imminent" i was acting like a ostrich with my head in the sand..
On most shots with my 10D currently running about 35k frames from new... the shutter seems to "take" when it wants to... some times its "fine" and at other times its painful... 1-5 seconds...
I press the button, see the focus lock indication and then press further and then wait... and wait.. and wait...
Is this the symptom of shutter failure?
Thanks...

You wouldn't have the remote timer set, would you?
Remote Timer?
If you mean the delay settable for 10 seconds to allow you to take a self portrait or to trigger without shake on a tripod... then the answer is "NO" that was NOT SET.
Its a random time amount.. the delay timer makes beeping noises and has the great big front flashing light... this is DEFINITELY NOT the case...
Thank you...
wish it were that easy...

Sorry to hear that. I should think it's more likely shutter button failure than shutter failure. I suppose the shutter itself could be hanging up, though if that were the case I'd think the mirror would swing out of the way first, then the delay would occur.
The 10D was a great camera, but as I recall in more recent models several times Canon touted changes to increase longevity.
A 40D or 50D might make a good upgrade if that 5DII stays out of reach.
By the way, I still have my 10D, even though my primary body is my 40D. It still takes great photos too.

I thought I was the only one creating a personal canon DSLR museum!
I keep mine for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I occasionally land up taking photos in places I'd really rather not take a camera, and I kid myself that the 10D is worth nothing so I'm not really risking much... I have to say, last time I went to such a place I took the 5D anyway. Secondly, it's handy to use it to entice one of the kids to take some shots with dad. That's worked a few times.
Hope you get it sorted ksgkphoto

Ok, so it sounds like its not a shutter issue, , it might be the button for certain! I spend a lot of time shooting at events where I don't want the camera to sleep, so I've not only used the button 35k times, but more likely 70k times to keep the camera "awake"..
I'm not complaining, its given me great service, and even now as others have alluded it makes a great camera for "risky shots". Infact I recently bought a ebay one for my 13yr old...
Thank you all...
Noel: that 50D looks enticing, but I'm getting a little sick of having a crop factor, and I havent had the opportunity to go EF-S and I'm not sure if I would do it, knowing that if I ever did go full frame I'd have lenses I coudlnt use...

Both of my 10's, both of my 20's and at least one of my 40's have had this problem. Some multiple times, but I frequently work in dusty environments. Most likely the shutter button contacts are dirty or the button needs to be replaced.
And yes, I still one one of each museum piece.
