I don't think Canon has published any guidance/instructions but I just happened to have bookmarked a Will Shoot Photography blog on this very subject.

Thank you Felix, for that appears helpful.

I am curious, though, if using one setting--that is, maximum zoom level and largest aperture--is suitable for the lens over its entire range? For example, would a portrait photographer working in a studio be better off using his typical setting?

How repeatable is the focus on the lens. If you were to focus your lens on a target, would the focus be identical every time? Or perhaps a better question is, How much does it vary from best to worst over twenty trials (or something)?

I am glad you pointed me in the right direction for microfocus adjustments. I am not sure that it will be at the top of my list. But it is good to know what the process is.

Thank you again!

Re: 50d

Hopefully one of the full-time 1D users will chime in to pick up the ball on your question, Kevin, because I don't know other than it's recommended you use max zoom and wide open aperture (most shallow DOF).

(or maybe post your question in that section)

In fact, some 1D users originally claimed the AF Micro-Adjustment should only be used on primes but that idea has since been debunked.

I also had an informative AF Micro-Adjustment thread bookmarked which you might like to take a look at. Frequent visitor Doug Kerr was a contributor to that discussion.

Re: 50d

Thank you Felix. I will post something in the 1D section and see what happens from there. Regardless of that discussion, I greatly appreciate your bookmarked links. Because I have been happy with my focus, it's not a burning issue for me. There is always room for improvement, however.
