Something works better than expected - 40D clock

Ever since I've been shooting with 1.6x Canon dSLRs whenever I've looked I've noticed the camera's clock always seems to be off... At best it would be off just a few minutes; often it was more. I just checked my old 10D - which admittedly I haven't touched in over a year - it was off by over 13 minutes.

I am kind of particular about time... For example, I wear a watch that sets itself every night to the atomic standard broadcasts from Boulder Colorado.

Yet I just checked my 40D's clock (on prompting of a 5D shooter whose 5D was way off when checked) to see if it had remembered the daylight savings change and had gotten the leap year right. I haven't set nor checked it since last September, yet wow, the date is right and the time is dead on the minute as well!

No doubt some engineering effort went into making the 40D's clock more accurate. Bravo Canon!

-Noel

I just checked my 5D, and it didn't do the daylight savings change, but the date was right, and it was only 2 minutes off. I've had it for a little over a year.

My 1Ds was only 2 minutes off, and it already had the hour and the date right. I'll have to remember to check the time change next fall.

Well, there's something to crow about!

While there are some nice (incremental) changes, I have to say I'm generally underwhelmed with my upgrade to the 40D's. In fact, I'll probably use on old 20 for the job this weekend.

You'll only get my 40D if you pry it from cold dead hands!

My clock/date is dead on, but I've not checked my 20/30D for how they're doing. I'll be in the studio tomorrow and will check, just out of curiosity if nothing else.

I know folks that love 20Ds, but I never used one as a primary. I started playing with digital with a rebel 300 and skipped to the 30D when it came out and got a 20 as backup. It's only good for that IMO - toooooo damned slow at starting, processing, writing, focusing.

Re: Something works better than expected - 40D clock

My 5D knows about leap years apparently, but not summer time. I set the time when I bought it mid 2006, and it was 11 minutes out.

I'll crow about a DSLR's clock when it understands and adjusts for timezones and puts that in the exif. I have photos in bright sunlight that were taken in the middle of the night if you get my drift...

Of course, that means it must be GPS aware. Hey, that may not be too far away. Bring it on!

Sorry guys, but this is has really been useful information. I know my photos will improve at least 50% if my clock is correct.
