lens comparison

Has anyone shot with and have comments on the EF 24-70/2.8L USM as compared to the EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS USM? Assume a 40D body used for a general all-purpose lens with the ability to do portraits as well.

Do these lenses have problems with barrel/pincushion distortion?

Re: lens comparison

Well, I compared the 17-55 2.8 IS to my 17-40 F4 L. I liked the color and sharpness in the 17-40 over the 17-55. I also liked that I coudl use the lens on my Film bodies and my Mark Body as well. I dont understand why they put IS on a 17-55... I have shot my 17-40 hand held at 1/20th and 1/30 of a sec with no issues before.

Just thought you might want to hear about another lens that might work well depending on your needs. I needed one that was tack sharp for the Cars I shoot and make my $$ with. The 17-40 F4 L was the best value and a great performer. Also it was sharper at 17mm than my other buddies 16-35mm was. Never used the 24-70 much. I had a 24-105 F4 and it worked great for me and never saw the need to go to the F2.8 24-70.

Take care and may all your shots be in focus....
