Canons best portrait lens?

I am looking for a Canon "top of the line" (best image and mechanical performance) portrait lens that will allow the most background blur plus excellent performance in low available light. My camera is the 30D. Suggestions appreciated.

Ron

Re: Canons best portrait lens?

The 85/1.2 is arguably the top of the line. However, with the 30-D, the 50/1.2 might be a better choice. It depends on whether you like the classic 80-85mm portrait focal length (which you would get with the 50), or the longer 135mm-equivalent length (which you would get with the 85).

You also might try the 85/1.8. This is not an "L" lens, but it's very nice for portraits, and a bargain.

I'll second the 85 1.2, and that it depends on what focal length you like. I use it on a 5D and it's wonderful, but it might be a touch long for 1.6x camera.

Another lens is the Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens.

Canon | Telephoto EF 135mm f/2.0L USM Autofocus Lens | 2520A004

This lens is more suited to the full frame, so it might be a touch long for 1.6X cameras. Something to consider.

Re: Canons best portrait lens?

I was not thinking about the EF 85mm f1.8 but I just read some B&H reviews and this lens has an excellent reputation. Yes, it is probably a bit long for the 30D but I could live with that. I have also read excellent reviews about the EF 50mm f1.2L lens. I realize that comparing an "L" lens with the 85mm f1.8 may not be fair but those of you that may have both lenses, what is your evaluation? This site is GREAT!!! Thanks.

Re: Canons best portrait lens?

I have the 50mm, 1.8, with my 30D. Could not be more pleased.
Good luck.

Re: Canons best portrait lens?

It would be tough to beat the combination of quality and price of the 50mm 1.4 Canon lens. I have had one for years and it is a wonderful piece of glass plus quite inexpensive for the quality.

The focal length works quite well as a portrait lens for the 1.6 Cameras.
