40D same file format as 20D

Does the 40D create the same CR2 image files as the 20D. The Lightroom 1.2 upgrade specifies support for the 40D, implying that the files are different. I'm considering buying a 40D and I'm wondering if I will have to upgrade my Extensis Portfolio 7.

thanks much.

Almost certainly not. The 40D has 14 bits per photosite of data, where the 20D has 12.

Notably Photoshop Camera Raw didn't support the 40D until they released an update.

And the 30D is different than either the 20 or 40 as well.

Sort of off-topic but...

I do find it annoying that different RAW formats use the same file extension... it's just wrong to have different *.CR2 or *.NEF "flavors."

This isn't an 8.3 DOS world any more... but I guess *.CR40D, *.CR5D, etc., would just be too logical
