40D - Rings in Viewfinder

Anyone else notice, in their 40D, the appearance of faint concentric rings of light in the viewfinder when the image is out of focus? I think they're more apparent with my longer lenses, but I'm not sure.

It's no more than a curiosity, and the rings seem to disappear when the image is in focus, but I'm wondering if everyone is seeing them. I've certainly never seen them in any prior Canon body. Is this a manifestation of whatever new technology they're employing to make the viewfinder brighter than ever?

What lens? I read a review on the 400mm DO IS lens where the tester said he could see faint rings under some conditions. Forget exactly what those conditions are.

Re: 40D - Rings in Viewfinder

I see them with both my 28-135 zoom and 100-400 zoom. They present as slight circular variations in brightness out near the left and right edges of the viewfinder, centered around the middle focus point. Frankly I think they look most like machining marks in the surface of the focusing screen.

The good news is they don't affect camera performance at all; the thing takes flawless images.

Re: 40D - Rings in Viewfinder

I bought the 40D to use exclusively with long lenses for wildlife photography. As such, I am always in a hurry to get the lens focused to get the image, {wildlife waits for no one}, but will see if I can see what you see next use.

I have been pleasantly surprised at the overall performance of the camera. I had a learning curve to get over at first, but once adjusted to my liking it has become a favorite.

Thanks, Ron.

So Canon has done it again... New users love it and long-time users of Canon dSLRs love it (well, I do anyway).

Re: 40D - Rings in Viewfinder

I still have and use a D2x and a S5 Pro, with about a dozen pro lenses. The learning curve was prolly more difficult because I had always used Nikon. I am determined to get the best from both brands. The 40D is making it easy.

A little off topic but,"what is Nikon thinking" with their prices on superteles? Glad I made the switch to Canon. Just can't think of any reason why Nikon should price itself $2300.00 higher than Canon for a 400mm F/2.8 stablized lens?
