unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any pancake or near-pancake lens for EOS. what is the smallest and lightest lens in the 28-45mm range, that can be mounted onto a canon?

Well, they're not exactly pancakes, but for small and light, take a look at the Olympus Zuiko primes (manual focus & stop-down metering, of course, but that's what makes em small and light). I have the 28mm f/2 & it's all of small and light. It can be mounted on a Canon camera with an adaptor. Is that what you have in mind?

Have you seen Loreo's "Lens in a Cap"? I was looking for a pancake to keep on the camera for quick snaps and this is what I found. Effectively a pinhole lens (and by no means a high-quality lens), it does produce some interesting shots when you're in a pinch. Mounts directly onto an EOS body - no converter - and costs about $15 (so, honestly, who cares?). 35mm fixed focus, adjustable apeture from f/5.6 to f/64.
