pancake lens for canon

unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any pancake or near-pancake lens for EOS. what is the smallest and lightest lens in the 28-45mm range, that can be mounted onto a canon?

Well, they're not exactly pancakes, but for small and light, take a look at the Olympus Zuiko primes (manual focus & stop-down metering, of course, but that's what makes em small and light). I have the 28mm f/2 & it's all of small and light. It can be mounted on a Canon camera with an adaptor. Is that what you have in mind?

The EF 35mm/2 and EF 28mm/2.8 are pretty small and light...

Yes--the Olys are tiny!!

The 24 f2.8-- a great lens for the $$--is teeny-tiny--even smaller than the 28 and 21! Of course, on a 1 series body it looks a bit odd...

One of the best lenses I have used in the Pancake label is the 45mm Tessar.

Amazingly sharp. 45mm F2.8. Currently sold new by Nikon as the 45mm P, and you can get the older contax versions on the used market.

If you are looking for light, you won't beat this lens. And for the details it will capture, it's worth having. You can carry it in your shirt pocket.

Re: pancake lens for canon

Have you seen Loreo's "Lens in a Cap"? I was looking for a pancake to keep on the camera for quick snaps and this is what I found. Effectively a pinhole lens (and by no means a high-quality lens), it does produce some interesting shots when you're in a pinch. Mounts directly onto an EOS body - no converter - and costs about $15 (so, honestly, who cares?). 35mm fixed focus, adjustable apeture from f/5.6 to f/64.

They also have a number of other gadgets - I've had suprising luck with the 3D Lens mounted on a 20D.

Way fascinating.

The reference to a "water wheel" stop is presumably a corruption of "Waterhouse stop".

Best regards,

Doug
