Re: CF card not readable..salvageable?

[ QUOTE ]
for your trip i would sugjest taking several smaller card as opposed to one larger card. for instance i shoot using several 1gb or 512mb cards. if one card goes bad during the day i do not loose all the images from that day/outing but only the images that are on the one bad card.

I'd rather shoot at least 1GB cards. I don't think in practice you are risking much. It is not practical when in an action area to change memory cards in the height of action, be it fashion run way or the charge of a rhino!

Even 2GB is modest. FWIW, I'm moving to dual recording on CF card and SD card simultaniously, if the camera has this feature) for sensitive non-repeatable data.

In any case, the data should immediately by backed up to a portable hard drive device and the card not rewritten until another copy is on you computer!

For the cost of a journey to to an exotic place, the extra cost of more cards so one does not have to rewrite them in the field is trivial.

Re: CF card not readable..salvageable?

I got back from Egypt, & had a good time shooting.

No CF card problems. I dumped all the card images to the Powerbook, before I left for home.

I just went to the Long Beach GP, & got back. I plugged the CF card into my Lexar FW reader (desktop PMac), & files were there. When I unplugged the card (without ejecting it), & put the card back into my 20D..I got "no images"!? I think the same thing is happening again. Is the problem, the fact that I'm pulling the CF card, without ejecting it?

Now, I've got TWO CF cards which need recovery. I sure as heck hope I get these images back. Someone please tell me what is going on. I will stay away from the desktop Mac, & just dump images to my Powerbook & archive on CD.

Re: CF card not readable..salvageable?

Bob

I think I did something similar to you about 6 months ago witha 1Gb card on my 20D, downloading to an iBook. The system hung for some reason and I had to remove the card and reboot. Fortunatly the images were all on the Mac. The card showed all the images were missing.

Recovered 90% of the images using Photoresue PC on the CF card ( This is a PC programme as I use both Mac's and PC's). However I don't know if the card was faulty or not but it wasn't happy after the incedent. It kept loosing images even after the recovery programme. reformatting didnt help either. Had it replaced under manufaturers warrenty. Subsequent cards OK

Now I make sure the card is ejected from the MAC. PC's don't seem to have this problem.

Hope this helps

Agreed about Windows machines not having this problem..........I yank the CF card out of the reader all the time and its never caused me any problems. Strange that it would be so much different for the Mac, unless its doing some sort of directory maniuplation when the card is mounted.
