Re: 30D Cleans Up 20D Issues, How About Image Qual

OK, I guess I'm the only weirdo that likes the sound of the 20D shutter! One of my bodies was at Canon for repair last season. So I took one for the team and used an old 10D body. When I fired the first frame I thought, "uh oh, what's going wrong with the shutter?". Turns out nothing. I had just grown accustomed to the 20D's sound and I like it.
Darn it!

I've never really *diskliked* it, but in some cases I found myself wondering if it was obtrusive. I think it was more my concern than anyone elses as I never did get dirty looks or even much of a notice from the shutter noise. I believe it seems a lot louder to the person holding the camera than those near it.
You're right about the 10D. I borrowed one to use as a remote camera and had the same "uh oh" feeling when I pushed the button on the pocket wizard to check it out.

The 10D feels a lot different to the 20D not just because of the noise. I think the longer mirror-blackout contributes a lot also.
The louder noise was what I noticed when I moved from the 10D to the 20D, but whenever I moved back it was the shutter blackout that struck me as dramatically different.

Funny, the things we notice.

My thought was it was alot like pay raise. In that it was comfortable right away and made things a little better. But it sure was hard going back! All those little refinements really added up. Especially when you thumb goes hunting for the joystick to switch focusing points on the fly.

Compared to the sounds of film cameras that I used for years the 20D sounds fine. Mucho quieter than my old F3hp or Hasselblads.

Re: 30D Cleans Up 20D Issues, How About Image Qual

I am not normally bothered by the 20D's shutter noise either. But there has been one exception. On a photo safari in Botswana last year, our Range Rover circled around some trees in anticipation of a group of elephants emerging in the vicinity. They did and I shot a few frames. One of the mother elephants immediately looked in our direction and then gave us a mock charge. Then a second. That was enough for our guide to "floor it" and get us out of there. I learned soon after that elephants don't see particularly well, but they have fabulous hearing. Anyway, I got some great shots, and I'm still around to talk about it.

Hi, Allen,

So, will they remember it well enough to be able to tell if the 30D is louder?

Best regards,

Doug
