Perhaps the disappointments expressed and complaints are due to the fact that no new real technology is incorporated into the 30D. All of the new features could easily have been part of the 20D 18 months ago.

I suppose so. But note that no one else brought out a similar camera 18 months ago. AND the 20D was hailed when it did appear.

More to the point I think that we are going to see a plateau in DSLRs for a while. The items that people are pining for will be incorporated on a piecemeal basis so as to ensure a regular upgrade revenue for the mfgs.

We will see some dramatic new stuff sometime but I wonder how much it will affect our picture-taking compared to how digital has already changed it?

Pixels at some point will be meaningless. I hardly ever print over 8 X 10's or at the most 11 X14's. At those sizes heck the 10D looks fine. I have a 5D and will probably purchase the 30D for the upgrades alone. I love the 1.6 crop and I love the full frame of the 5D. Different uses for both. Landscapes for the 5D and portraits for the bokeh. 30D for birding and macro.

Re: More impressive than the 30D look what is atta

I guess that we have been spoiled by the rapid development and availability of ever better DSLR at lower price points for the past few years from Canon. Actually nothing short of terrific.

Now that the products are maturing and the cameras are already more that what most of the market needs in terms of image quality and features, enter the 30D, a refinement of an already great camera, the 20D.

Currently, I own a 1DsMkII and a 20D. My past cameras were the 1DMkII and 10D. Using only "L" lenses, I'm now settling in to enjoying the technology and refining workflow, Photoshop skills and building the computer system necessary to take advantage of the larger image files. The learning opportunity seems endless, but it's all good fun for me as an amateur.

Progress, not perfection! Enjoy the journey.

My 2 cents.

They could have been, but they weren't, and the 20D still turned out to be an excellent camera. To me, it seems that Canon took note of the most common gripes about the 20D (lack of ISO in viewfinder, lack of RGB histogram, lack of spot meter, limited raw buffer, lack of Picture Styles, lack of sexy 5D-like LCD, etc., etc.) and put that into the 30D. I will take those real-world improvements over, say, a measly bump from 8 megapixels to 10 megapixels (which would been a lot more expensive for Canon, putting in a brand-new sensor), and everything else staying the same.

I'm seriously thinking of selling my 20D and 1D Mark II now, and replacing them with two 30D's and a 5D down the road. I've had my 30D for about 10 days now, and I am *that* impressed by it.
