Canon RAW software

A friends wife is using a Canon Digital Rebel for photographing sports teams. Presently all her shooting is in Jpeg, but she wants to experiment with RAW. What does CANON provide in way of software to work in RAW. And what other programs are there out there besides PS.

Re: Canon RAW software

Canon had two conversion programs - EOS Viewer Utility and Digital Photo Pro. Both make good conversions (and DPP in particular) makes excellent conversions. Both have a clunky interface and awkward workflow. EVU was on the disks that shipped with the camera. DPP is a free download from the Canon web site.

There are a bunch of other raw converters out there. If you do not have or do not want Photoshop, you can still use the Adobe Raw Converter with Elements 3 (or 4 if your friend is on windows). ARC offers, IMO, a good interface and better workflow than the Canon software.

Re: Canon RAW software

I loved Raw Shooter Essentials trial, and the new features in Raw Shooter Pro sounded so terrific when it came out that I instantly paid for the upgrade (at a very very competitive price compared to other alternatives!) to get the new features, too.

Re: Canon RAW software

I've used all of the different RAW conversiion products for the Canon RAW files (10D and 20D) and I've found that Photoshop CS2 has the best overall. The workflow is fantastic and it is the most efficient of all of the products.
cheers,
Roger

I wouldn't be suprised if the Canon RAW software put her off RAW for life, even the new version of DPP leaves a lot to be desired and the older ones are just awful.

Please tell your friends wife that using RAW is what digital photography is really all about and give her a trial of Rawshooter and Breezebrowser Pro (which is brilliant for about half a dozen reasons).

If she has a real interest she'll immediately be hooked by what RAW can do
