Re: New Canon 70-300 f4 IS USM

I guess I should not be surprised that people will compare this lens to the 70-300/DO-IS.

The 70-300/DO-IS costs a heckofalot more, but gets mixed reviews due to flare and bokeh issues.

By all accounts, however, this lens is merely an updated 75-300/IS. Pricing at $650 ($400 plus the new 50% markup that is appearing on all new lenses) is indicative of this. I think the real question is how this lens stacks up against the 75-300/IS.

Note that comparitively speaking, the 70-200/4L with 1.4TC ($575+$275) is a comparative bargain.

True, Jim, and for many the 70-200 f/4 (with or without TC) will continue to be an attractive option. However, there is one big factor that makes the comparison interesting, and that is the lack of IS on this lens.

Re: New Canon 70-300 f4 IS USM

Is there a lens hood that is more suitable for use on the new 70-300 USM on a 1.6x body?

At 5.6" and 1.4 lb vs. 7.4" and 3 lb, I'm thinking this lens will make a much more suitable lightweight hiking/fishing companion for my 20D and Sigma 18-200 than the 100-400L does.

I'm not sure about the hood. (A more "effective" hood would be longer than the default hood, right?)

Right. I suppose it's not as critical for a telephoto as a wide angle (e.g., substituting the EW83-DII on the 16-35 or 17-40), but it can't hurt.

Re: New Canon 70-300 f4 IS USM

Canon UK, shipped both the 5D and newer 70-300 well before US. The 5D is just now hitting the shelves and I believe the 70-300 also.

Glad to see that this new lens is performing well.
